[High Court Rules] Baleka Mbete Fit As A Speaker of the National Assembly

(Written by Scelo Mncwango) - The Western Cape High Court ruled yesterday that Baleka Mbete is fit as National Assembly speaker.

This follows a court battle that was initiated by the opposition after they claimed that Mbete had suppressed President Zuma's impeachment debate over the country's handling of Sudanese President Al Bashir's visit to South Africa.

The DA threatened to take Parliament to court after their bid to debate the matter failed in August.

During the argument, DA chief whip John Steenhuisen refused demanded that the matter be debated despite the fact that Mbete was following the programme of the day.

Mbete responded to attacks from the day saying, “You are at liberty to take the matter to the high court. I also have a role to play, I have considered all issues before me. I have taken a decision and written back to the honourable member who had written me [on the motion]. And you have the freedom to approach the courts.”

Agang SA, Congress of the People (Cope) and the United Democratic Movement (UDM) joined the DA and protested against Baleka Mbete. It became clear yesterday that the court was not convinced that impeaching President Zuma over Al Bashir had sufficient grounds.

Yesterday's high court ruling affirmed Mbete view that she was actually following the rules of the house in suppressing a debate that was not scheduled for the day.

Parliament welcomed yesterday's judgement. "The judge has spoken and the judgement is clear. Parliament notes and welcomes the comprehensive judgment. We will look at it and comment further but we welcome today's developments," said Parliament's spokesperson, Luzuko Jacobs.
