Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille is accused of abusing her power to manipulate the legislature for her own gains. This comes after Zille suppressed a debate relating to her secret appointment of a private investigator to bug opposition cellphones. This is prohibited by the The Electronic Communication Act of South Africa.

The opposition in the province had asked for the debate to be moved to the top of the agenda but the DA refused.

The ANC brought the motion to the legislature in terms of Section 130 (3) of the National Constitution. The view held my the ANC is that Zille violated the Constitution or the law; or was unable to perform the functions of her office.

Previously, the DA tried to apply the same section in its failed attempt to impeach President Jacob Zuma.

The DA is accused of using its vote to suppress legislature debate on Zille impeachment for working with individuals who are criminally charged. The private investigator that was allegedly hired by Zille was arrested and his court case is still pending.

The ANC has asked questions regarding the use of police officials in their personal capacity to illegally spy on ANC activities. Zille has avoided all questions and has since denied all allegations.
